Taxi associations operating under the Mogalakwena Taxi Forum have protested at Valtera Mine in Mapela over ongoing traffic congestion allegedly caused by mine transport vehicles at Moshate Cross Road near Mahwelereng.
Speaking to the local radio, Mogalakwena Taxi Forum Secretary Sunnyboy Bambo said taxi operators have been trying for nearly two years to engage with the mine on the issue, but their concerns remain unresolved.
Bambo said the congestion, mainly caused by a large number of vehicles transporting mine workers and other commuters from different provinces, has negatively affected taxi operations and business in the area.
Taxi operators have proposed solutions, including a park-and-ride system in nearby communities, where local vehicles could transport workers from residential areas to designated pickup points.
The protest started in Machikiri, Mapela, with many taxi operators and traffic officials descending on the small village. The mine was given seven days to respond.
